James J. Dottavio

James (“Jim”) Dottavio is a registered patent attorney, admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and before the United States District Court of the Eastern District of Michigan.

Mr. Dottavio served as the Director of Technology Transfer at West Virginia University, and previously served as in-house IP Counsel for the Ford Motor Company and Owens Corning. In these roles, Jim managed a large IP portfolio, prepared and prosecuted patent applications primarily in the mechanical arts, and also prepared and prosecuted design applications. Jim prepared legal opinions in relation to patentability, infringement, patent validity, and freedom to practice. He prepared and prosecuted trademark applications, and provided legal opinions on trademark clearance and registration. He negotiated and drafted many agreements, including confidentiality, development, licensing, supplier, M&A and others. Jim also managed outside counsel performing these tasks and for litigation.

Jim received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute), an MBA degree from Bellarmine University and a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Wayne State University.
